BUTIAMA MAFIA ISLAND

Butiama Mafia Island consists of three family run accommodation venues and one diving centre on Mafia Island off the coast of Tanzania. With more than 20 years experience in the hospitality business we aim to offer you personalized and impeccable services, providing you a vacation with a difference.

We are the only business with properties inside and outside of Mafia Island Marine Park and have one of the best restaurants on the island. Our facilities include beach pool bars, a spa, a pool with a sea view and beautiful white sandy beaches. Our location also offers you the opportunity to swim with Whale Sharks. 

WHO WE ARE

Butiama Mafia Island is run by Maura and Moez. Maura is originally from Italy and arrived in Mafia in 1999 to run one of the lodges on the Island. Here she met Moez.  Moez was born in Mafia and was raised between the island and the mainland. In 2004 they met a South African client and they became good friends initially and than business partners. In 2010 we opened Butiama Beach and our adventure together started.

We are fortunate to be able to offer our guests different options for their accommodation needs whilst they are staying on Mafia Island.

BUTIAMA BEACH LODGE

Butiama Beach Lodge is situated on the west coast of Mafia Island, just next to main town of Kilindoni and outside of the Marine Park bounderies. The lodge is the perfect beachfront retreat to relax and unwind and our beach is the departing point to go to swim with whale sharks. With only 13 bungalows and a maximum occupancy of 32 people it allows you to have privacy and space. We are a family business and aim for casual and relaxed atmosphere which caters for couples, friends or families. From Mafia airstrip it takes around 10 minutes by car. Butiama Beach Lodge was open in 2010.

We are lucky to be able to offer our guests different options for their accommodation needs whilst they are staying on Mafia Island.
Our on-site accommodation and restaurant/bar facilities are designed for the “budget-minded” traveller. Our philosophy is to offer clean, basic facilities with locally-sourced ingredients to try to keep your accommodation and food costs down. This means you have more money to explore the fantastic diving sites that Mafia has to offer!

BUTIAMA MARINE SAFARI TENTS

Located in the gardens behind the Diving Centre, we have several safari tents. These tents have a light, power socket, twin beds and safety deposit boxes inside. They have access to communal toilets and showers. Linen and towels are provided. Designed especially to accommodate our divers, we have packages available which include your airport transfers, accommodation and diving.

BUTIAMA BUSTANI HOTEL

Butiama Bustani Hotel has been named after its tranquil garden setting, as Bustani means “garden” in Kiswahili. It is situated on the West coast of Mafia Island in an area called Magemani – this means “cliff-top” in Kiswahili. With only 10 rooms it is the perfect garden setting to relax, whilst remaining close enough to the local emenities. It is a quiet area looking down on the Indian Ocean. It is close to the main town of Kilindoni and outside of the Marine Park boundaries. From Mafia airstrip, it takes around 5 minutes by car.

BUTIAMA BEACH FACILITIES

PEKU PEKU RESTAURANT

All of our accommodation is offered on a half board basis and lunch can be purchased on site. Breakfast is served from 07:30 on wards and dinner from 19:30 till 21:00. The restaurant has beautiful ocean views and is located close to the bar.

Our breakfast includes seasonal fresh fruits, muffins, pancakes, cereals, toast with jam and honey, eggs, bacon and sausages.

The dinner is a 3 course set menu. We can cater for vegetarians and guests with specific requests or allergies. Please inform us of these special requests when booking. Children’s meals can also be arranged.

CHIRINGUITO BEACH & POOL BAR

Set at the edge of the beach, the Chiringuito Beach & Pool Bar is the perfect place to relax. It is open from the morning until the last guest has gone to bed. We have a good variety of soft drinks, local beers, wines & cocktails. Please ask our barman to see the price list and he will be happy to assist you.

If you would like a fresh coconut to drink or eat please feel free to ask our barman and we will get one from the tree for you! There is a dartboard, table tennis and pool table available and you can find some reading books in our library at the bar. An a-la-carte menu is available with a variety of choices for lunch or a snack. Our staff will be happy to serve your choice on the beach or around the swimming pool. Tea, coffee & herbal teas are available all day.

SPA

Located on the beach you will find a traditional “banda” or locally made hut, where you can relax and enjoy a massage.
We do holistic and deep tissue massages using Pure Virgin Coconut Oil from the island. We also do manicure & pedicure

YOGA

Our Yoga studio is located right on the beach – the best beach of Mafia Island. Our studio is the first of its kind on the island, and we encourage it as a space that is welcoming to everyone.

Our classes are suitable for all levels of yogis, even if you have never tried yoga before. With both local & international teachers guiding the way, you will learn to love the practice or will embrace new challenges and growth on the mat with us.

SWIMMING POOL

Butiama Beach Lodge has a swimming pool overlooking the ocean, where you can relax, cool off and enjoy a cocktail at sunset.

Please note that our swimming pool is unsupervised, so guests are advised to use caution when using the pool facilities and do so at their own risk. Persons under the age of 14 must be supervised by an adult, who shall be responsible for that person’s safety and conduct at all times.

DINING & BAR

All of our accommodation is offered on a bed and breakfast basis. Lunch and dinner can also be purchased from the Restaurant, an a-la-carte menu is available. The bar/restaurant benefits from views of the gardens and swimming pool, with distant views of the Indian Ocean.

We can cater for vegetarians and guests with specific requests or allergies. Please inform us of these special requests when booking. Children’s meals can also be arranged.

GARDEN SWIMMING POOL

A recent addition to the Bustani Hotel is a large, central swimming pool in the gardens. Bask in the glorious African sun, then cool down with a dip in the pool and a refreshing cold drink! As a sister company of the largest Dive Centre in Mafia Island, Big Blu Mafia Island Dive Centre, we are also able to arrange scuba diving “taster” sessions in the pool if you want to try your hand at diving.

DINING & BAR

Breakfast is included with room prices. A lunch/snack menu is available during the day. We offer 3 course dinner menu and you will be able to book it in advance with our Camp Manager. Please let us know if you have any special dietary requirements and we will do our best to accommodate.

Complimentary tea and coffee are available at the drink station in our restaurant. Bottles of water and other beverages can be ordered from the bar and charged to your room.

BIG BLU MAFIA ISLAND DIVE CENTRE

Big Blu Mafia Island Dive Centre is a large, fully equipped Dive Centre. Diving equipment is available to hire, or you are welcome to bring your own. Most of the equipment that we use is Scubapro, with most equipment having been purchased in 2015 and 2016.

We take pride in making sure that our equipment is well-maintained and looked after. Within the Dive Centre, there is a large wet-room for guests to hang and store their hired or personal diving equipment during their stay with us.

Payment Policy
Prices include breakfast, a daily three-course dinner and complimentary tea, coffee & water from our restaurant. Transfers to and from the airport are also included., Payments : Reservations made through agents or operators are considered confirmed only upon payment of the full amount of the invoice (net of bank charges) 45 days before clients’ arrival. Direct clients are kindly requested to pay 50% of the reservation price upon confirmation of booking and the balance 45 days prior to arrival (net of bank charges)., Extras : Lunch options are available from our restaurant and may be charged to your room. Drinks are available from our bar and may be charged to your room. Diving and other excursions are available and may be charged to your room.
Cancellation Policy
Cancellations Reservations cancelled 15 - 30 days before the arrival date will be subject to a fee of 50% of the total reservation. 8 - 14 days - 75% of the reservation price and under 7 days will be subject to 100% cancellation fee.
