Other things to note

The island of Korcula is one of the biggest and most populated island of Dalmatia, the Mediterranean region situated in the Adriatic sea. It is the southernmost island of the Adriatic Middle-Dalmatian islands, and as so is the whole region part of the State territory of the Republic of Croatia. It has a surface of 276 square km, is 46,8 km long with the wides part being 7,8 km. The east side of the island is only 1270 m far from the land and peninsula Pelješac, whilst the west side ranges deeply into the Adriatic Sea. Along its shore there are 50 smaller islets. The island is built from lime-stone with its highest peak of 568 m (Klupca). The majority of inhabitants live off tourism and agriculture (vines, olive-trees, vegetables and citrus fruits). A minor part makes a living by sailing around the seas of the world (maritime and shipbuilding are traditions of the whole region and by other activites.

Korcula is renowned for the beauty of its nature and rich cultural heritage. Suffice it to mention the islet of Proizd, elected in 2007 as the most beautiful beach in the Adriatic, or the town of Korčula – one of the most beautiful medieval towns in Croatia. A mild climate and plenty of sunny days on a yearly basis are particularly beneficial to the vineyards of Korčula where the highly reputed white wines Grk and Pošip come from.

Korcula’s cuisine is among its top attractions. While there is a variety of international restaurants located throughout the island, the local staples of lamb, cured ham and fresh seafood grilled with olive oil and parsley should be experienced. Also not to be missed are the island’s indigenous wines, Posip and Rukatac. Visitors can indulge in Korčula’s specialties served in the island’s restaurants, taverns and agritourism.

Those more active will have hiking and cycle paths at their disposal, as well as diving centres and sport facilities.
Korčula was inhabited back in prehistoric times, as witnessed by the archeological finds from Vela Spila (literarly Big Cave) near the little town of Vela Luka on the western part of the island of Korcula located at the bottom of a deeply and wide bay indented by many coves, the slopes of which descend slowly to the sea, covered with vineyards, olive trees, fig trees and pines. Wide panorama views, a mild Mediterranean climate, clear sea, an interesting and rich cultural heritage, various sports and leisure potential make Vela Luka an attractive tourist destination.

Vela Luka is the largest town on the island, a municipality with almost 5,000 inhabitants, 42 km from the city of Korcula by island road, which ends here. The town developed at the beginning of the 19th century in a deep sheltered bay. It has several hotels, and the Kalos medical centre for rheumatic disorders and rehabilitation. The inhabitants are farmers, fishermen, work in tourism, and the town also has the Greben shipyard, Jadranka fish factory, and other smaller industrial plants. This town with 2671 hours of sunny weather annually, is the second is size place on the Adriatic islands, a safe anchorange and port for boaters.

Vela Luka is surrounded by many bays with fine beaches. Scattered as pearls in the bay of Vela Luka, the little islands Proizd and Ošjak celebrated in songs are popular tourist excursion destinations, virgin oases surrounded by clear sea and covered with thick pine woods. .

A scenic view on the Hum hill gives an unique view of Vela Luka and the broad surrounding of the island of Korcula.

Restaurants in Vela Luka base their gastronomic range on local food and provide service in pleasant Mediterranean interiors with the ubiquitous sounds of “klapa” songs, for which Vela Luka is Widely known. The gastronomical riches of the Korčula island you may enjoy in the rustic village athmosphere set amidsts the pine and olive groves.

The Cultural Centre in a renovated Baroque building, the old Kastel summer house, has a fine prehistoric archaeological collection from the nearby Neolithic site Vele spilje, and from Roman localities in the surroundings of the town. If you go to Vela Luka in the summer do not plan only to spend every day on the beach since here you can see and feel charming Dalmatian folkloric festivals.

During the months of July and August many performances, concerts and events takes place. Some of the most interesting are Vela Luka festival, small boat race of Sveti Ivan which begun in 1933 when a Britain warship commander, delighted with the island and its inhabitants, proposed to perform a rowing race between the warship crew and the locals. The natives resulted winners and since then, every June 24th in Vela Luka bay a rowing race takes place. Another major events held in Vela Luka is the "Kumpanija" tournament, a medieval role play surrounded by all necessary artifacts to make it appear that we are in the Middle Ages. This event takes place on the day of Sveti Josip (St. Jozeph), recently recovered after 75 years and have been some of the locals who have recovered this beautiful folkloric event. During nights the summer atmosphere and juvenile invades the place and invite us to enjoy with friends at any terrace or pub in the town.

Private accommodation, an exchange office, Internet service, a variety of cultural events (museums, galleries, entertainment, guided tours to interesting churches and the neolithic arheological site the Big Cave).

The Mediterano yacht services are at the disposal to those visiting Vela Luka with their own boats and who wish to go sightseeing, dine well, or, just taste the high quality domestic wines, prize-winning olive oil or fresh fish.

The Korčula island may be viewed by a car, scooter, bicycle or a boat available in agencis. Day trips to Dubrovnik, the town of Korcula, or the small islands Ošjak and Proizd are an obligatory part of services. Surrounded by numerous islets, inlets, lush vegetation with wide areas of olives and vineyards, Vela Luka is a promise of an authentic Mediterranean holidays.

Best time to come april – november

Regular ferry lines – from Orebić on Pelješac penisula to Dominči (ferry quay not far from Korčula town), from Split to Vela Luka and from Drvenik to Korčula (only in summer) connect the island with the mainland and from Lastovo island. Fast catamaran lines connect the town of Korčula with Split and Dubrovnik, and Vela Luka with Split. The largest Croatian ferry company, Jadrolinija, runs coastal ferry lines connecting the town of Korčula with Rijeka, Split and Dubrovnik, and in the summertime with Bari as well. There are also regular bus lines linking the island with Dubrovnik, Sarajevo and Zagreb, while local bus lines operate on the island.

This is a lovely quiet spot. The place for you if you want to stay away from the busy end of the island and have a base from which to explore. Finding it was easy enough with Jelena's instructions and the GPS. The house is nice. It may be a little basic for some. The views are fantastic. The veranda perfect for lazy mornings and evenings. During the heatwave the pool kept us cool. The walk down to the sea is fine for most but difficult for anyone less sure of their feet. The little bay is rocky and good for diving and snorkelling. You'll need swimming shoes. Korcula is a beautiful, friendly and a varied island. There's lots to see. Jelena is helpful, kind and responsive. We are grateful to her for having us stay.

The house is beautiful and it is in the middle of the countryside - it adds a lot of magic. It is quite difficult to find it, but Jelena will help you to find it.

A beautiful house with even prettier scenery. Jelena was a helpful host full of valuable information and advice about everything related to the house, location, beaches etc., making our vacation very fun and trouble free. If you are looking for a remote house with access to clear sea beaches, I would definitely recommend this vacation house.

Weg vom typischen Tourismus. Ich kann diese Villa von Herzen weiterempfehlen!
