THE ESTATE Macchia di Tuono, just outside the Sila National Park and only 2 km from the city center of San Giovanni in Fiore, covers 102 hectares at an average height of 1,180 meters above sea level.
The history of the company dates back to the end of the 1700s when dr. Francesco Barberio, a pharmacist of training and profession, driven by a great feeling of attachment to the land, livestock and nature in general decided to enhance its fund giving life to the company Macchia di Tuono.
HIGHLAND ITALY Highland cattle have been an important part of Scotland's landscape for centuries and their origins are rooted in antiquity.
Evolved in a difficult environment, this breed is protected by a thick skin and a long coat of double fur (a soft under-coat and a layer of coarse waterproof fur), rather than the thick layer of fat that other breeds need to maintain the body warm in the winter.
Macchia di Tuono is, to date, the only company in Calabria and one of the few in Italy that breeds the Italian Highland certified breed, pedigreed animals.
PLAYBACK It is the company itself that manages all phases (reproduction, weaning and fattening). The breeding follows the canons of the closed cycle thus obtaining the reproduction of calves with their own bulls and mares. Fertilization occurs naturally. Of calves born, a percentage of selected females will follow the career of mare. Calves live together with the herd.
CLOSED CYCLE Closed cycle also means that no cattle are introduced from other companies, as it happens in open-cycle farms (87% of meat farms in Italy). The entry of "foreign" pathogens is therefore very limited. There is therefore in our kennel a "stable immunity" that the cow transmits to the calf in the first days of life through colostrum. The antibodies contained in the colostrum will defend the calf for the whole life from the attacks of the pathogens that circulate in the farm. The importance of following the whole cycle is reflected both on animal health and on the quality of their meat, and indirectly on the environmental impact.
