Description

Capo Vaticano is a majestic granite promontory, apparently one of the most ancient formations in the Mediterranean basin, and was known as a sacred destination all over Magna Graecia. Two hundred meters off the cape sits a rock called “Il Mantineo,” whose name is believed to be derived from the ancient prophetess Manto, who lived in a cave on the cape. It is believed that she is the same oracle visited by Odysseus on his along his journey. Like my father writes, “Some days you have the impression that Odysseus just sailed by”.

His feelings are shared by most. In 2004 the French tourist guide “Editions Grand Voyageurs” ranked the beaches of Capo Vaticano as one of the three most beautiful Italian beaches, among the 100 most beautiful in the world.

Because of its unique position and beauty, you can enjoy breath-taking views of the Aeolian Islands. On the last day of April and on August 13th, if the day is clear, the sun sets directly into the crater of the volcano Stromboli, located directly in front of Capo Vaticano, making it appear as if the volcano is exploding. To the left of Stromboli and the Aeolian island, you can see Sicily and the strait of Messina. Again, on clear days, Mount Etna is in full view, an active volcano that like Stromboli, periodically releases puffs of smoke.

You can access the coves below the cliff by a private stairway carved into the granite. A series of small white sandy beaches that roll into the crystalline sea with its different graduations of turquoise and blue are also reachable by boat. Several other beaches are just minutes away by car or by boat. Excellent diving and fishing, sailing or wind surfing are available.

In total privacy, surrounded by vegetation, the property offers eight cottages for rent. Here you can forget the rest of the world and enjoy nature at its best. On the cape there is always a breeze and even in the hot days of summer, the climate is pleasant. All the houses have kitchens and you can take advantage of the wonderful bounty of our private organic gardens. Take a stroll through the property and pick your own vegetables, herbs, figs, pears and grapes. Make sure you taste the famous red onions from Tropea. You may purchase olive oil, wine, pickled vegetables, fruit preserves, cheeses, fresh eggs, Limoncello and Finocchietto liqueur from the local farmers. And of course do not forget to taste “l’nduja di Spilinga”, a spicy salame spread that with its faint smoky taste is unforgettable.

Our Houses

L’ ANGIOLONE

The name means “The big Angel”.
This house is named after the antique, wood paintings of angels that decorate the interior.
My father built the original structure in 1977 to host an art exhibition
of objects-sculptures representing the local “peasant” culture and
civilization that was rapidly disappearing taking with it, among other things, the beautiful architecture of the old houses. He published a short book to present the show, which is a real gem. “Intorno alla Calabria”.
Years later the space became a one-bedroom house that can host a couple or a family of three as well.
There is a small kitchen, dining room and a living room area enclosed by a glass veranda. The outdoor dining area is covered by a pergola of “uva fragola,” or “strawberry grapes,” named as such for similarity in flavor to strawberries. Surrounded by Mediterranean vegetation, you are only a few feet away from our garden where you can pick your own vegetables and when in season fresh figs and pears.

IL PORTICO

The name describes the architecture of the house, in particular the arched covered porch in the front.
This house is on two separate levels, the bedroom which can accommodate one queen bed or three twin beds and bathroom are located upstairs and the kitchen/dining area and second, half bathroom are downstairs. The upstairs and downstairs connect by steps on the side of the house. The view of the sea from here is exceptional.
In addition, the downstairs dining room area has a built in couch, which can also be used as an extra bed.
The covered porch in the front is perfect for outdoor dining and relaxing.
From here you can watch the sunset and you’re just a few meters away from our organic garden.

IL NIGHT

Long, long ago my mother and father were traveling through the south of Italy, in search of a special place for them to spend part of the year. When they arrived on top of this cliff near the lighthouse they had no doubt: they had found one of the most beautiful and mystical places in the world. From then on, my parents, and then myself and my family, have spent each summer in Capo Vaticano.

Years after discovering Capo Vaticano, my father decided to open a discotheque, which at the time were often called “Night”. He built and designed it right on top of the cliff, and in August 1968 the Night was born. Although it was only open for a few weeks, the name has remained with it.
This is the smallest of the houses, but also the most spectacular and charming of all.

The structure remains faithful to the original, a small and low house designed to blend in with the landscape; so well in fact, that it almost seems as if it has always been there, part of the Cape.

The upper level has one small bedroom, whereas the kitchen, bathroom, closet space and pantry are located on the lower level. Outside, the house has a beautiful, large terrace that overlooks the sea and the white beaches beneath. On clear days you will feel on top of the world, with Sicily visible to the south, the Lamezia gulf to the north, the Aeolian Islands and the volcano Stromboli directly in the line of sight. From here you will enjoy the most spectacular sunsets.

CASA DUE

This house is named “House Number Two” because it was the second house the writer Giuseppe Berto built on the property.
Located next to a small, mature, pine orchard, the house is the largest on the property, has two bedrooms, two bathrooms and a full, tiled kitchen and an outdoor shower.

Elegantly furnished with antiques the warm atmosphere of the house will make you feel very welcome and at ease.

In Capo Vaticano all the houses are very different, my father studied the rural architecture of the old traditional country homes and
A relentless promoter of the beauty, the civilization and the rural architecture of Calabria built our houses in Capo Vaticano to blend in with the landscape and preserve the beauty and the spirit of the “peasant” culture and civilization.

The large covered porch that surrounds the property where you can dine or relax on comfortable lounge chairs is a typical example of the beautiful disappearing architecture of Calabria. A terrace where you can enjoy beautiful sunsets and views of the property surrounds the porch.

Casa Due can accommodate up to five people and it’s perfect for a family or a group of friends who love the peace and quiet of nature, close to the beach but also only twenty minutes away from the night life of Tropea.

CASA DI ANTONIA

This is the house that my husband and I built.
This is a one bedroom, one bathroom house with a very large, spacious open kitchen and living room. The two couches can be used as one queen bed or two single beds. The kitchen table easily sits eight people.
Perfect for a family vacation or for a group of friends.
The lavish Mediterranean vegetation assures you total privacy,
a large outdoor patio surrounds the house where you can dine outside and enjoy the sunset. During certain weeks of the summer you can admire the sun sunset right behind the Stromboli.
In Capo Vaticano you will enjoy some of the most spectacular sunsets.
The organic garden is just a short walk away and so is the trail that takes you to the beach below.
When in season you can take advantage of the pears, the figs and the prickly pears that are typical of our area and grow in the property.

CASA BOCCE

Surrounded by mature pine trees, this house is named “Le Bocce” because it’s located next to its private bocce ball court. This is a one-bedroom house with a tiled bathroom, and a full kitchen enclosed by glass doors. Full of light and furnished with antiques the house has a very warm, welcoming feeling.
From the patio you have a great view of the property, the Mediterranean vegetation gives you privacy and the Eolie islands with Stromboli are just in front of you. From here you can enjoy beautiful, romantic sunsets.
