Lovely Farmhouse Featuring an outdoor pool with 11 Rooms and 4 Apartments

The Holiday Farm Pozzo di Mazza is located about 7 km from Syracuse, just south of Porto Grande (the Big Harbour), in the pre-park area surrounding Plemmirio marine protected park, along the streets of the baroque, just a few minutes from the beaches of Arenella and Fontane Bianche.

Derived from a nineteenth-century tenement formerly intended for processing grapes, as demonstrated by the perfectly preserved millstone, the land around the block, now used for the cultivation of citrus fruits and vegetables, were once planted with vines.

Next to the local mill there is the great oven room with an unusual shape that evokes enchanting images of ancient country life and ancient fragrances of freshly baked bread, stuffed buns and roasted vegetables.

The farm houses are surrounded by a large garden which leads directly into almost all the rooms that are quiet, spacious and furnished with simple elegance, in harmony with the charming atmosphere of the whole place. All the rooms have private bathrooms, air conditioning, refrigerator and hairdryer. In the garden, there is a large swimming pool.

Kitchen

The kitchen of the farmhouse is still there offering the taste and authentic flavors of Sicilian cooking from early breakfast with homemade jams and homemade cakes served in the rooms or in the garden under the millstone in the olive grove.

The scents of Sicilian cooking from the kitchen continue on to dinner, where the taste of the vegetables and olives are presented in a thousand variations starting with the starters until the main courses offering the subtle bittersweets learned from the Arabs.

And finally the desserts with almonds, lemon, sesame ... accompanied by a muscat or a raisin.

The History

About fifteen years ago, I returned to live in Sicily. I wondered whether the block of Pozzo di Mazza could have been restructured and made fit to live in. This idea was later shelved, but the continuing deterioration of this building that I have always loved a lot has not been attended to. Hence the idea of turning the farm into a place suitable for living, without realizing the adventure in which I was entering.

I did not want to change the name that we find even in the very old signs. Surely the farm has two natural sources of water, two ancient wells still with their stone troughs. Farmers used to come to these wells to stock up on water and water the animals.

The oldest group of houses, including the home on the upper floor, was intended for processing grapes as evidenced by the prefectly preserved ancient millstone.

A good part of the land around it, before it was drilled for the extraction of water, and specialized in the production of citrus fruit and vegetables, were in fact planted with vines in the typical shape for low Arborello.

The grapes meant for crushing were brought in through the window halfway up the stairs and placed outside where it was crushed with the feet and the juice was allowed to trickle down to the stone trough below.

The extracted wine, we talk about a product whose alcohol content was approximately 18°, was placed in wooden barrels and placed in the adjacent cellar about two meters below to keep it at a cooler temperature.

Location

The farm, thanks to its location, makes it possible not only to enjoy the beautiful sea, but also a strategic starting point for visits to sites declared by UNESCO "world heritage" and that in south-eastern Sicily are: Siracusa, Noto, Ragusa, Modica, Scicli, Palazzolo Acreide, Ispica, Pantalica and then Taormina, Caltagirone ... and for excursions to Etna, the Cavagrande lakes, sources of the River Cyane. From Syracuse you can also arrange a day trip to Malta.
