Description
Ours house is run by a family whose members are passionate about nature, beauty and spirituality,  as well as history, the territory, but also the taste of flavours delighting the body and the soul.

Loving and respecting the environment today means mainly loving humanity in all its complexity,  in a time where men and women seek enjoyable shelters, also and above all to rediscover the mystery that has been lost in a hectic everyday life.

The word “monastery”, regardless of personal values and beliefs, refers precisely to the deep sense of this research full of wonder and joy, as a break that makes a personal journey, sometimes too hard, lighter.

Our families, that have Italian, Spanish and Latin American origins, have been working for many years in this beautiful area of Piedmont,  in sectors that are more similar than we might think: « Beauty will save the world » (F. Dostoevskij) as well as giving a shelter to of more or less fragile or weary people.

BED AND BREAKFAST

Monastero del Rul is open all year round.

It will be awakened by the sounds of different birds, after spending a silent night, sometimes delighted by the song of other birds, and you will enjoy a rich breakfast buffet, in the dining room or in the garden. For those who want, we can prepare a delicious breakfast basket.

There are also some spacious and comfortable spaces available for meditation, reading and fraternal dialogue, decorated with old furniture and paintings, as well as large and picturesque fireplaces.

Moreover, we offer a fax service, internet access, Wi-Fi, both in indoor and outdoor spaces, a library, music and the friendliness of the inhabitants of Monastero del Rul.

MONASTERO DEL RUL

Monastero del Rul lies on a hill visible from the viewpoint of Albugnano to the north-west, exactly on the head of Monte Rosa.

The location of the address (Vezzolano 57) recalls the ancient connecting road, which is still visible through the woods,  connecting it to the neighbouring valley where there is the famous Romanesque monument of  Santa Maria di Vezzolano (according to legend, founded by Charlemagne) located just over half a kilometre in a straight line. On the horizon you can see the Alps,  especially the Gran Paradiso, Rocciamelone, Orsiera and Rocciavrè mountains, which are well visible, up to the East, to the Pennine Alps in Lombardy, with beautiful views of Monte Rosa and the Matterhorn Pyramidal peak, which, on a clear day, seems so close that it feels like you can touch it with your hands. Monte Rosa, on the other hand,  offers fire-coloured landscapes lit by bright sunsets, dominated by the mountain, with its 5000 metres.

The farmstead, which once belonged to the Allamano family, is an old building carefully renovated, recorded in Asti at the end of 1600, and certainly built on foundations dating back to the Middle Ages.

The origin of its name is also unknown, as well as evocative. Rul is the legendary oak tree  that was consecrated to the Druids and to Jupiter, a pretty common name in the area where, however, the settlement is located on the edge of a forest of oaks and hornbeams.

It is also called Ruffo or Rufo: some typical Roman names that refer probably to Rufus, a former colonist who, just like Albonius came to colonize these lands south of the Po at the time of Augustus.

It should be remembered, in fact, that the whole area was subject to intense colonization activities in the first century AD with the establishment of Roman colonies between Hasta (Asti) and Augusta Taurinorum (Torino), on the road to Augusta Pretoria (Aosta) so that the land that had been controlled by the Gauls and the Celts for centuries could be finally romanised. Not far away, on the banks of the Po,  they built, almost as a premonition of what would happen nineteen centuries later in Turin, “Industria” which today is Monteu da Po, characterised by foundries and by iron manufacturing industries throughout the Roman foothills.

Maybe Rufus, just like Albonius, brought here, from Lazio and from Campania Felix, grapevines (which there remained, until now) and olive groves which survived from the Roman times, incidentally, only in Piedmont, thanks to a very special microclimate, characterized by mild, quasi-Ligurian-Mediterranean winters.

Certainly, the Ligurians and the Celtiberians were the first inhabitants of this land, then came the Celts and the Gallo-Romans.

Later, also Rufus’ Roman house was called Rolf, then Monferrino and Cascina Rolfo, when it was included in the registers of Asti in 1600.

LOCATION - THE TOWN OF ALBUGNANO

Albugnano is a charming agricultural town, standing on a hill (558m above sea level) and overlooking the valleys of Rio Nevissano, to the west, and Rio Freddo, to the east. Its privileged location offers visitors stunning views: the eye is lost between woods and vineyards; on the background, the Alps. That is why it is called “the balcony of Monferrat”.

The name Albugnano, which has a Latin origin, with the “-nianum” suffix, refers, almost certainly, as claimed by D. Olivieri in his “Dizionario di toponomastica piemontese”, to Albonius, a Roman who had his villa built in this area. On the other hand,  the positions taken by Matta and Bosio, who argue that its name derives from the Latin “albus”, for the whiteness of its land, or from the Celtic “alp” – “alb” which means “high ground”, are less popular.

The origins of the town are still unknown: probably it was a former colony of Liguria,  and, during the Roman Empire, it housed almost certainly the villas of wealthy patrician inhabitants of Augusta Taurinorum or Industria (Monteu da Po). It was later invaded by the Lombards, who, according to some documents, built a castle here, which was rebuilt by the Marquis of Monferrat and destroyed by the French at the beginning of the fifteenth century.

The square, today the “Belvedere Matta”, had a tower, until 1861, which was later demolished, the last remain of the ancient manor house. The events of the municipality of Albugnano were complex: it originally belonged to the Committee of Vercelli,  then to Brozolo, the municipality of Asti, the Marquisate of Monferrat and, finally, to the Savoia family, under which it became a fief of the Benso di Ponticelli, the Gautieri, the Serra.
