The structure of the Tenuta del Barone was constructed in around 1550. Originally it was a military structure with a classic “L” shape used to oversee and maintain control of the valleys on each side. Using large mounted mirrors, the military warned the Moncalvo garrison in case of enemy attack.
Toward the end of the 16th Century the building became the homestead and hunting lodge of painter Guglielmo Caccia (1568 – 1625), otherwise known as “The Moncalvo” who, according to tradition, enjoyed lengthy stays, hunting as he pleased.
In 1774, the count and painter Fancesco Ottavio Magnocavallo moved to the homestead, adding the gothic-style double-arched and four-leafed clover features to the loft windows – preserved architectural features which today remain a striking feature of the structure.
The buiding's annexed chapel was added in 1860. On the 16th August of the same year the bishop of Casale Monferrato, Monsignor Ferrè, consecrated the chapel dedicating it to the Saint Giovanni Battista. The chapel is in the neoclassical and Napoleonic style with capitals in Doric-Corinthian style.
After Magnocavallo's time as owner passed the property several times before it was bought by the Colombo family in 1988. The property underwent an extensive restoration and modernization in line with the property's 500 - year history.
The property was run as a B&B for 30 years, before changing ownership again.
Marit Ringvoll and Gaute Gerotti Skjørestad bought the property in 2020, and still operate the farm as a welcoming B&B.
The building is featured at the National Institute of Belle Arti and is listed as a “monitored site” of importance in the Penango area.
