About Us

Grove Fort is a self catering farm house in the heart of County Down, Northern Ireland. It is situated on a working cattle and sheep farm and while the setting is rural and peaceful it is a central location for visiting most parts of Northern Ireland. It comprises 3 bedrooms and can comfortably accommodate 6 people.

The original farmhouse has been renovated and modernised. It is situated where Grove and Fort roads meet -hence the name! The front of the house looks up the hill towards Gransha Fort. The owners, Ivan and Annette Rankin, live next door and are on hand to deal with problems and give directions etc as necessary. For this reason check in and leaving times can be quite flexible. We welcome cyclists to the house as we are on a very popular cycling route, over the very challenging Slieve Croob to Castlewellan. Secure storage for motorcycles and bicycles is available.

Location

Grove Fort farm is situated in mid to south Down in the rolling Dromara Hills on the edge of the Proposed National Park incorporating the Mourne Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. The source of the river Lagan is just a couple of miles away in Slieve Croob, as is Finnis Souterrain / Binder's Cove and the famous Legananny Dolman. The beautiful scenic 12-mile drive over the 'Rib' or the 'Windy Gap' will take you to Castlewellan or Newcastle in 20 minutes by car (where the Mountains of Mourne sweep down to the sea!) and perhaps slightly longer if you cycle or walk! At the top of the Rib on a clear day, it is possible to see 5 of Northern Ireland's 6 Counties. The surrounding terrain is very hilly and exceptionally suited to cycling - though not for the faint-hearted! Dromara has its own cycle club and the local roads are often included in cycle competitions e.g, Giro d'Italia. Hill walking and orienteering are also possible local occupations

The main road Dublin / Belfast road is just 6 miles away at Dromore; Belfast and the Belfast City Airport can be reached by car in 40 minutes, Dublin in 90 minutes approximately. Larne Port and the International Airport are 50 minutes drive away

Excellent house, very clean, super quiet location, very nice beds. Really nice to have 2 living rooms and private parking.

An absolute hidden gem! We had an amazing time, everything was perfect, house was absolutely spotless! Everything we needed was there, from an iron to a hairdryer and a great range of kitchen utensils, we will be back

The house had everything you could possibly need or want (including black-out curtains). The farm is very quiet. And besides the occasional car driving by there are no civilisation noises to be heard. Very central to all kinds of different interesting locations. Lots of information about activities in the area provided.

Had a relaxed few days away in Grove Fort Farmhouse with the family. Beautiful area. The Farmhouse was very spacious & clean and had everything we needed for an enjoyable stay. The Owners were very accommodating and were on hand if we ever needed them as well.

All of it! Especially the gift of homemade scones, a pint of milk in the fridge and tea bags! Just what we all needed when we arrived. So much space, yet cosy at the same time. Plenty of parking right next to the door, felt very safe and was lovely a quiet despite being quite close to the road. Immaculately clean and enough central heating to be very comfortable.

Anette&Ivan were lovely hosts. House was so clean and felt really homely. Stayed with my two children and our 2 dogs ,and had everything we needed there. Lovely fire at night and had some lovely scones left out for us on arrival. Will defently be coming back here again, so central for loads of places. Thankyou
